Fiber? Low-Fat? Novel Protein? Practical Answers for the "Sensitive Stomach"

14 May 2020
Clinical Theater 3

Selecting diets for pets with medical conditions impacting the gastrointestinal tract will be discussed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. An overview of nutrients of concern, pre- and pro-biotics, and fiber will be provided through case examples to illustrate strategies for selecting appropriate diets based on nutrient profiles.

  • By the end of this lecture, participants will be able to:
  • 1. Describe the nutrients of concern and nutritional approaches to acute and chronic gastroenteritis, adverse reactions to food, IBD, and colitis.
  • 2. Explain the difference between pro- and prebiotics as well as differences between soluble and insoluble fiber. 3. Recognize clinical situations in which pre-biotics, pro-biotics, soluble or insoluble fiber are appropriate to recommend.
  • 4. Select appropriate diets for pets with a variety of gastrointestinal conditions based on diet nutrient profiles.
