Program

RECOVER CPR Basic and Advanced Life Support

Monday, May 13, 2019 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

This lab will begin with a lecture to introduce the RECOVER initiative in the areas of Basic and Advanced Life Support (BLS and ALS).  The hands-on portion will begin with closed-loop communication, then we'll use mannikins to perform chest compressions, practice intubation and ventilation. We will discuss appropriate monitoring during CPR and how to interpret what the monitors are telling you. Wear scrubs and be ready to sweat and have fun! **Certification not provided.

Speaker: Liz Hughston MEd., RVT, CVT, VTS-SAIM, ECC. She has been a practicing veterinary technician since 2006. In 2012, Liz was certified as a VTS in both Small Animal Internal Medicine and Emergency and Critical Care. Ophthalmic Surgery: What Should I Do? When? How?

A variety of ophthalmic eyelid abnormalities affect our veterinary patients.  As veterinary ophthalmologists, we are often asked what eyelid surgeries can you and should you be doing in your practice?  What might be best to refer?  Let’s discuss eyelid structure, abnormalities, and therapeutic options. Video will be used as an adjunctive teaching aid.  Discussion will be encouraged during this Masterclass session.

Speaker: Elizabeth Giuliano DVM, MS, DACVO. Dr. Giuliano (B.S. from CU 1991, DVM from UW-Madison 1996, AMC internship 1997, Boarded in Veterinary Ophthalmology 2002). She is a dynamic, engaging speaker and has lectured extensively at national and international venues. Dr. Giuliano is currently a tenured Professor at the University of Missouri and Section Chief of their comparative ophthalmology service. She served as ACVO President from 2015-2016, has authored over 80 articles and text-book chapters and is the recipient of numerous teaching awards.

Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy to Address Cranial Cruciate Ligament Insufficiency

Cranial cruciate ligament failure is one of the most common orthopedic conditions causing lameness in dogs and most veterinarians advocate surgery to improve limb function.  The tibial plateau leveling osteotomy typically yields good functional results and is currently the most common procedure performed by veterinary surgeons to address this condition.  This laboratory will discuss the underlying pathology associated with cranial cruciate ligament failure and will give a detailed instruction of how to plan and properly execute the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy procedure.

Speaker: Daniel Lewis DVM, DACVS. He received his DVM from UC Davis in 1983 and completed an Internship at LSU and a Small Animal Surgery Residency at UF in 1987. Dr. Lewis is currently a Professor and Eminent Scholar at the University of Florida. He is an ACVS Diplomate , a former President of the Veterinary Orthopedic Societ and he has authored & co-authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications.

Beginner Ultrasound Laboratory

This laboratory is geared towards finding the “Big 5”. Hands-on training with experienced sonographers will rapidly give you the confidence to not only find the organs but also see each organ completely.  The lab will give a great opportunity to scan different animals with different instructors to gain experience with the machines and probes.

Intermediate/Advanced Ultrasound Laboratory

Tuesday, May 14, 2019 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

This laboratory is geared towards finding the smaller structures within the abdomen. Adding to the basic acquisition of the “Big 5” the smaller organs will be found. Normal anatomical structures will be identified to facilitate finding the smaller structures such as lymph nodes and pancreas. The lab will give a great opportunity to scan different animals with different instructors to gain experience with the machines and probes.

Intraoral Dental Radiology Reading Workshop

Tuesday, May 14, 2019 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

A dynamic workshop presentation utilizing intraoral clinical radiographs will be presented in order for the veterinarian to understand, learn, and enhance interpretation of intraoral radiographs in the dog and cat. The importance and necessity of intraoral radiographs will be presented by using clinical case examples. Normal radiographic dental anatomy to abnormal pathology will be presented to prepare the participant to learn how to assess and make radiographic diagnoses and appropriate treatment recommendations.
